Having been brought up in a household that moved frequently due to my dad’s job relocations, my K-12 education was in 11 different schools and sometimes mid school year. Though it wasn’t always easy to continually walk around with the label of “the new girl,” I did eventually adjust to the nomadic pattern and actually began to enjoy exploring all the new places we moved as a family and all the new friendships I made along the way. There were some common outings or childhood hobbies that remained consistent over the years regardless of our geographical “visit.” One of those was most definitely skipping rocks on any nearby body of water. My younger brother and I made it into our sibling competition. Regardless of where we lived, we loved searching for the perfectly oval shaped gray pebble or dolphin gray seashell and tossing it like a frisbee to cause the rhythmic ripples across the silver sheet of still waters - be it a lake in Minnesota or Michigan, a pond in Georgia or South Carolina, a river in Tennessee, or a calm coastline in Florida or Virginia.

The color in focus this week is Pebble Gray and the playful variations of patterns, textures, and colors that are much like skipping rocks along a smooth slab of gray. Think of the beautiful contrasts of a cement sidewalk that has sprigs of green grass rising through the crevices, the dried imprint of a child’s shoe print and name that had been placed into a once-wet concrete slab, the dreamy pink blooms of a Japanese cherry blossom dancing upon a washed out grey-to-brown tree base, the textured masterpiece of two lovers who’ve carved their initials like an addition equation into the distressed grey bark of a tree pillar.
