Hazel is: Cerulean

Imagine the bouncing rays of sun sparkles upon the rich aquamarine blues of pool waters and you’ll soon find yourself wandering the cheerful hues of Cerulean. Every art class I ever took from pre-k up through my range of art classes in college, having majored in Graphic Design, were complete with a rainbow of paints, oil pastels, crayons, chalk, among other mediums. When it came to the time students were instructed to select one color of choice from a box of Crayola crayons, I always gravitated to Cerulean. The paper wrapper was an underwhelming hue of distressed gray-blue denim that encompassed a darkened rod of midnight blue, but when applied to a sheet of paper my 5 year old pre-K, 13 year old middle school, 21 year old college eyes lit up with joy every single time. How could something that appeared so drab and muted produce something so saturated? I guess it could be said, “don’t judge a crayon by its cover.”

I don’t take it lightly that I have been privileged to travel all over the world. Surrounding the color of Cerulean ocean waters, I can quickly travel over to Palm Beach where I last lived for a handful of years, to Copacabana and Rio de Janeiro where I ventured with friends for Spring Break, to being serenaded in Italian while riding a gondola with friends along the canals in Venice, to playing soccer on the beach of Acapulco for a day of leisure with friends after spending 2 weeks doing missionary work in remote villages across Mexico, to going on one of many photo spree adventures throughout Tunisia as shown in one such snapshot I took above. I mentioned it in the last “Hazel Is” post, but truly color as well as its application in our senses can infiltrate our memories and how we recall and build experiences. Try adding the tropical element of Cerulean in a retro way by creating a sleek photo collage of past vacations infused with vibrant pops of ocean blues that are tucked in oversized white matte borders and black frames. Update your tabletop place settings with bright aquas, such as our handwoven rattan and shell placemats (see here) on a dining table or the matching coaster set to a coffee or side tabletop (see here). Satisfy your house guests’ sweet tooth cravings and show off your culinary use of Cerulean with gourmet cotton candy ice cream served in aqua ceramic cups (see here) topped with mini blue shark gummies.
